Did you know that ChatGPT has become a very popular website? Latest data from SimilarWeb shows that ChatGPT.com also now ranks as the 6th most visited in the world. This is a big jump from the position of 8th it held last year. Now, AI chatbots have overtaken famous sites like Reddit, X (formerly Twitter), Netflix for web traffic.
For ChatGPT, traffic in January 2025 represented 2.33% share of all internet traffic, up 5.91 percentage points last month. It is just second place only to Google, YouTube, Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram in terms of the number of visitors. Google is still leading, although their traffic share has depleted to 29.21%, and is followed by YouTube, who is cruising with traffic share of 20.40%.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, said the platform was growing and continued to have a long way to go to compete with Google. He went to X to share the latest rankings with the following playful comment: “Man, still a long way to go to run down Google.”
This has helped Awad to prove that ChatGPT’s popularity is rising, which means AI tools are becoming more popular as people seek writing, research, and information help using artificial intelligence. If it continues growing, it could with new features like web search and ease access.
Can ChatGPT ever come close to Google? That remains to be seen. Nevertheless, OpenAI can count this as a huge success!
