India’s one of the biggest companies, Reliance Industries, plans to set up the world’s largest artificial intelligence (AI) data centre in Gujarat, India. The Jamnagar data centre will then be the largest, in terms of power capacity and will strive for a capacity of three gigawatts. Once done, it will lead India to be one of the leaders in the global AI race as per Bloomberg report.
This is a big step in helping to boost Indian digital infrastructure. The system will be based on advanced AI technology, so it will support tools driven by AI such as ChatGPT and other AI platforms that need massive computing power. Reliance is working with Nvidia, a global leader in AI semiconductors, to make this happen. Because they help process those complex calculations of AI.
Last October, Reliance said that Nvidia will supply its latest AI processors for its Jamnagar data centre. This would be a one gigawatt facility first and would grow to three gigawatt. The purpose of collaboration is to reinforce India’s AI capabilities, and to empower its emerging tech industry.
Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani says India has a huge potential for AI and digital technologies. Adding that apart from the U.S. and China, India has the best digital infrastructure, he asserted. Ambani wants to deliver AI most affordably possible to everyone in India with the lowest AI inferencing costs in the world.
While Reliance is not solely focused on AI, the data centre being built will use clean energy. The company expects to fuel the facility with renewable energy, including solar, wind and green hydrogen. This will also help make the data centre more carbon friendly and support India’s tech industry towards sustainable growth.
Experts believe Reliance is entering the world of big boys with this new project, and one that it would be able to compete with the likes of Amazon or Microsoft. The data centre would enable India to triple the existing data capacity and also move up a few notches in the global tech race.
Reliance Industries ambitious project could make Jamnagar a global hub for AI in the coming years.
